In this town of the Facebook headquarters and the Stanford powerhouse, there is a dirty little secret: while both of our high schools are nationally ranked, the pressure is secretly killing our children. When your classmate becomes an Internet millionaire when he is not old enough to drink (let alone graduate from your high school), it can put tremendous pressure on you. We don’t know the specific circumstances leading to this particular tragedy, but as a parent of a soon-to-graduate senior, the suicide of a local high school kid saddens us a great deal.
Today I went to pay respect at the makeshift memorial. So much potential lost:
The sign says “There Is Hope,” and there is. Please never withhold a hand or shoulder for those in need. Humans can be fragile and broken easily. Tell your children you love them.
